Institute of Technology and Education of Koszalin University of Technology (KUT)

The Institute of Technology and Education of Koszalin University of Technology (KUT) for over twenty years conducts research focused on the vacuum-plasma technologies, PVD and CVD and thermal-diffusion processes: gas and plasma nitridining.

The main directions of these works are as follows:

  • Arc and magnetron technology of thin films of transition metal compounds     
  • Nitriding technology and study of growth kinetics of nitrided layers on iron and steel alloys
  • Use changes in the magnetic properties of the nitrided material to control of layer growth directly in the process
  • Investigation of the structure and properties of PVD coatings on carbon-based
  • Development of a method for testing the thermal stability of thin adhesive layers

The Institute provides implementation services for business in range of the deposition wear resistant coatings on a variety of cutting and forming tools, including the use of hybrid technology (duplex).

Previous relevant experience at KUT:

  • COMPLEX METALLIC ALLOYS with 12 European partners in frame of the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union: 2007-2009
  • The implementation-investment project in frame of the INTERREG III A: "Implementation of vacuum - plasma modern technologies in the production of woodworking tools for the furniture industry and forestry-wood in the Euroregion Pomerania”. 2006-2007, budget 0,5 mln. €
  • The project entitled "Hybrid surface modification technologies of tools to woodworking" financed by the European Union within the European Regional Development Fund. 2009-2012, budget 2,4 mln. €.

The Head of The Department of Materials and Processes Design is Prof. Jerzy Ratajski. His research field is related with surface engineering, thermochemical treatment, vacuum-plasma technologies and mathematical modeling of nitriding and PVD processes. He has published more than 80 papers in reputed journals and attended and presented research papers in more than 100 seminars/conferences in and out of the country. He has managed several research projects.
